A Distinguished Scholar Seminar featuring Gerhard L. Weinberg, William Rand Kenan, Jr., Professor of History, Emeritus

China was one of the four major Allied powers of World War II, but it receives the least amount of coverage in histories of the great conflict. Yet, that nation suffered immensely before, during, and after the official dates of the Pacific Theater conflict. Riven by civil war since 1927 and faced with the onslaught of imperial Japan since 1931, China still managed to provide invaluable aid to the Allied cause despite its own internal division between nationalists under Chiang Kai-Shek and communists under Mao Tse Tung. Join Adventures in Ideas’ favorite Gerhard Weinberg as he takes us on another country tour of World War II.  We learn about the Japanese encroachment on the mainland, the growth of the Chinese Communist party, the role of Chinese troops in the war effort, and the bitter resolution of the civil war after the Japanese defeat. Don’t miss this chance to hear one of Carolina’s finest scholars narrate the story of China in World War II over four stimulating lectures.
