An Encore Seminar

We mark 2014, the hundredth anniversary of the beginning of World War I, with this reflection on The Great War and its lasting impact. Our speakers are two distinguished Carolina scholars.

Samuel R. Williamson, Jr., served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Provost of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and as President of The University of the South. He also held professorships in history at both institutions. An expert on World War I, he is the author of several books including The Politics of Grand Strategy: Britain and France Prepare for War, 1904-1914, The Origins of a Tragedy: July 1914, and Austria-Hungary and the Origins of the First World War.

Christopher M. Armitage is Professor of English and Comparative Literature at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He specializes in seventeenth- and twentieth-century English and Canadian literature. One of UNC’s most popular teachers, he has led the UNC/Oxford Shakespeare in Performance summer program since 1975. Dr. Armitage’s works include The Poetry of Piety: Four Centuries of Christian Poetry, Anne Wilkinson, and he is the editor of the recent Literary and Visual Ralegh

4:30 p.m. Friday, November 14 through 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 15, 2014. The tuition is $125 ($110 by August 29). Tuition for teachers is $62.50 ($55 by August 29). 10 contact hours for 1 unit of renewal credit. The optional dinner on Friday evening is $20.00.
