This year’s Alumni Summer College is organized in conjunction with the General Alumni Association and the Institute for the Arts and Humanities.

Program Details
Our theme this year is Living a Balanced Life: Families, Children and Society – Then and Now. Begin Thursday afternoon and an overview of The Family in History, with Max Owre (’04 MA, ’08 PhD), Executive Director of the Program in the Humanities and Human Values and lecturer, Department of History. A reception and dinner follows featuring keynote speaker Maxine Eichner (’97 MA, ’06 PhD), Reef C. Ivey II Professor of Law. Professor Eichner will kick off a weekend of stimulating lectures and discussions with her talk on The Marketized Family.
On Friday, Randall Styers, associate professor of religious studies, will discuss The Family in Christian History. Seth Kotch ’05 (MA, ’09 PhD) professor of American Studies will present Families, Oral History, and the American South. Friday afternoon will feature a panel discussion For Better Or Worse? Changing Trends in The Culture of American Marriage and Family with Daniel C. Hudgins, Senior Policy Analyst, Center for Aging Research and clinical assistant professor, School of Social Work, Anne Jones, clinical associate professor, School of Social Work, and Patricia Sawin, associate professor of American Studies and anthropology. Wrap up the afternoon with Elizabeth Engelhardt, John Shelton Reed Distinguished Professor of Southern Studies on Food and the Family. Friday evening, enjoy an optional dinner at The Carolina Club.
Saturday features sessions that take look at how the family has been portrayed in the arts with Jocelyn Neal, professor of music on The Family Makes Music, The Family in Music,followed by a lecture on The Family in Shakespeare featuring Mary Floyd-Wilson (’89 MA, ’96 PhD), Bowman and Gordon Gray Distinguished Term Professor of English and Comparative Literature. Dorothy Hoogland Verkerk, associate professor of art history, follows with a talk on The Changing Family in Western Art. We then turn our sites to more contemporary media with Jane D. Brown, professor emeritus, School of Journalism and Mass Communication, discussing Sex, Drugs & Rock ’n’ Roll Meets Sexting and the 24-7 Connection. Dana Coen, Director of the Writing for the Screen and Stage Minor, department of communications, gives a final afternoon talk on Changing Portrayals of the Family in Film. After dinner on your own, return for a special feature film chosen by Dana Coen on our movie night.
This year’s Alumni Summer College wraps up on Sunday with a panel session Migration, Mobility and the New American Family featuring William Sturkey on African American Families in the era of 20th-Century Migrations from the South, Ariana Vigil, assistant professor of women’s and gender studies, on Latino Migrations, and Jennifer Ho, Associate Professor of English and Comparative Literatures on The Asian-American Family Experience. We will once again enjoy a farewell barbecue to cap off our Alumni Summer College weekend.
Outside of class, you’ll have access to recreational activities and the pleasures of Chapel Hill. From the opening session on Thursday, to lectures and panel discussions, to the final barbecue, you’ll savor an unforgettable opportunity to expand your intellectual horizons.
