Most people imagine pyramids, temples, or huge statues when someone mentions Egyptian archaeology. Jennifer Gates-Foster will reveal the value of the smaller bits of the archaeological record and discuss their importance in developing a real understanding of the peoples of ancient Egypt. She is just back from a summer in the field, analyzing the pottery from recent excavations at the Ptolemaic gold mine of Samut in Egypt’s Eastern Desert, and co-directing an excavation at Omrit (Israel) focused on a 3rd to 5th century settlement near a major Roman temple on the ancient road from the Mediterranean coast to Damascus.
