The popular image of the Vikings is one of lawless marauders who terrorized the British Isles, the coastal regions of Europe, Russia, and the Black Sea. The raids of the Viking Age were indeed traumatic events for those unlucky enough to find themselves in their paths. Given the Vikings’ singular reputation for violence, it is natural to assume their culture was based on warlordism and a pure heroic warrior ethic. The reality, however, was rather more complex. This talk assesses how effectively the values and constraints embedded in Viking legal systems mitigated the ethos of “might is right.”
