Hiding Slavery in Plain Sight: George Moses Horton and the Unsung Founders

George Moses Horton, the first black person published in the American south (and this before he was literate) is one of the best known black North Carolinians of the ante-bellum era and at the same time he is still virtually unknown.  Tim McMillan, leader of the popular UNC “Black and Blue” tour of African-American impact on UNC, will introduce us to this underappreciated figure of UNC’s history and reveal the intersection of his legacy and the memory of slavery at UNC.

TIME: 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.
