No nation suffered more than the U.S.S.R. during World War II, but the story of Stalin, his relationship with the Red Army, and the heroic struggle of the Eastern Front are often overlooked in popular American accounts of the war. In four lectures, Gerhard L. Weinberg, the world’s leading scholar of World War II, will discuss preparations for war including Stalin’s murderous treatment of Soviet military leadership and his pact with Hitler, and the conduct of the Red Army in the largest military campaign in world history. Lectures will also touch on the civilian population in occupied and unoccupied areas of the Soviet Union, and the war’s legacy for the nation and the world. Gerhard Weinberg, William Rand Kenan, Jr. Professor of History, Emeritus, retired from teaching at Carolina in 1999, but remains active in his field. He is one of the world’s most distinguished scholars of World War II and National Socialist Germany. He is the author of ten books, including A World at Arms: A Global History of World War II, which received three major awards for scholarship, was a Book of the Month Club Main Selection, and is widely considered to be the best single-volume history of World War II. Most recently, Professor Weinberg was awarded the Pritzker Military Library Literature Award, a lifetime achievement prize for excellence in military writing.
