Barry M. Popkin, William Rand Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Nutrition, Gillings School of Global Public Health

Over the past three decades we’ve seen dramatic global changes in how people eat, drink, and move. This has led to very rapid shifts in obesity and many diet and obesity-related diseases. We’ve also seen an increased scrutiny of our food and beverage consumption and our patterns of activity and inactivity. Professionals and laypeople alike have reacted with alarm and disagreement regarding the best course of action as countries, states, and cities across the globe attempt to understand and cope with the ensuing health, economic, and welfare consequences of what happens when the world gets fat.
