Take a Walk on the Wild Side: When White Characters Masquerade Blackness

Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939) and Julie Marsden in Jezebel (1938) are not your typical southern belles. They defy patriarchy and resist prescribed roles associated with white femininity while defending the threatened South. Charlene Regester examines how these characters parade, imitate, and/or perform blackness while retaining their whiteness. She argues this masquerading blackness by the protagonists helps explain why these films hold an unending fascination for spectators.
