Kimberly Strom-Gottfried, Smith P. Theimann Jr. Distinguished Professor of Ethics and Professional Practice, School of Social Work and Director, Academic Leadership Program, Institute for the Arts and Humanities

Moral courage, or the capacity to act on principle despite possible consequence, is considered a key to leading with integrity. In the current academic climate of financial pressures, media scrutiny, and campus activism, courage is increasingly critical to university leaders. From her vantage point as director of the Academic Leadership Program at UNC’s Institute for the Arts and Humanities, Kimberly Strom-Gottfried will consider the personal and organizational barriers to courage, the unique aspects of leadership in higher education, and the significant role that courage plays in contemporary organizations.
