Fred Naiden, Associate Professor of History

“Sacrifice” in the Western tradition began with the burnt offerings of the Old Testament and also of the ancient Greeks, whose practices are the subject of Fred Naiden’s new book, Smoke Signals for the Gods. He explores the use and abuse of the word “sacrifice” in both ancient and recent times, especially abuse at the hands of political leaders. Instead of a practice designed to assuage guilt, sacrifice was a way to make contact with a divine being. Beware: sacred cows and sacrificial lambs might be at risk.
