The Crusades and the Modern Craze for the Medieval

Europeans and Americans have long been attracted to the crusades as a historical subject. What images and ideas have become associated with the crusades in the modern popular imagination? How did the novels of Sir Walter Scott, European imperialism, and the First World War (to name just three influences) shape those images and ideas? Why has the word “crusade” become so resonant in contemporary discussions of the War on Terror and actions in Iraq and Afghanistan? This talk will illuminate the historical uses and abuses of this centuries-old conflict.
TIME: 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.
