Shakespeare and Familial Relations
September 10, 2015
Mary Floyd-Wilson, Bowman and Gordon Gray Distinguished Term Professor of English and Comparative Literature
Troubled families drive the plots of all of Shakespeare’s plays, no matter the genre. We can find overbearing fathers, deadly rivalries among siblings, and mysteriously absent mothers in his histories, tragedies, comedies, and romances. But we can also trace narratives of reparation when we move from one genre to another. By reading several plays side-by-side, this lecture will consider how Shakespeare revises stories of tragic dysfunction with comic fantasies of restoration and forgiveness.
The program will begin at 6 p.m. with light refreshments followed by a lecture from Professor Mary Floyd Wilson at 6:30 p.m. in the Geddy Theater of the Raleigh Little Theater. This cost is $10 to attend, GAA members are complimentary. The Raleigh Little Theater is located at 301 Pogue Street in Raleigh.
