Explore the Experience of Slavery and the Meaning of Freedom with Frederick Douglass and the Chapel Hill Carrboro NAACP
Together with Flyleaf Books and UNC’s Carolina Public Humanities, the Chapel Hill Carrboro branch of the NAACP invites members and the public to discuss Frederick Douglass, his Narrative, and the lessons that can be drawn for today. This open forum will be led by Tony Frazier, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of History at North Carolina Central University.
About Frederick Douglass and his Narrative:
Renowned activist, orator, author, and statesman Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in Maryland two centuries ago this year. After escaping to New York, he became a leader in the national abolitionist movement. In 1845, he published the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass An American Slave, Written by Himself, which sold some 30,000 copies in nine editions by the eve of the Civil War. The Library of Congress has designated it one of 88 “books that shaped America.” Centered on the gripping story of the author’s experience of and flight from slavery, it also is a call to political activism and a reminder of the power of literacy.
The Chapel Hill Carrboro branch of the NAACP has adopted Frederick Douglass’s Narrative as a Branch Book Read and invites wide discussion of its contents and themes.
