A Dialogues Seminar
Join us for this eclectic examination of advances in transportation in the 19th and 20th centuries. We’ll begin with New York City’s solution to moving people across a rapidly expanding urban landscape—local trains that soared above and below the busy streets. We will place the development and expansion of the “subway system” in the context of the city’s political, social, and cultural life and will explore the lives of those who worked on the trains—including our speaker! We’ll then focus on the development of heavierthan-air flight, exploring the Wright Brothers’ famous invention and the birth of aviation in the 20th century. This historical examination of the science and business of getting off the ground will take us from Ohio to Kitty Hawk to the busy airports of today.
