From Africa to Auschwitz: Racism, Capitalism, and William Styron

featuring Danielle Christmas, Assistant Professor of English and Comparative Literature
We will explore author William Styron’s controversial argument that the atrocities committed against Black Americans, in the form of plantation slavery, and European Jews, in the perpetration of the Holocaust, can be explained solely by economic motives.

UNC alumni Jan Schochet ( ’75) and her brother, Barry ( ’69), have established the Schochet Family Series on Jewish Life and Culture in honor of their parents, Sidney (’40) and Mary Schochet. The gift is used to support faculty travel to community colleges around the state, specifically to share presentations on topics related to Judaism.
