“From Here to Equality”: The Role of Reparations in Healing America

November 18, 2020 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Join us for a conversation with William A. Darity Jr. and Kirsten Mullen, authors of From Here to Equality: Reparations for Black Americans.

Racism and discrimination have plagued our country since its earliest days, choking economic opportunities for Black Americans. In this virtual panel conversation, Dr. William Darity and Kirsten Mullen will discuss how this has resulted in massive gaps in wealth and opportunity that persist today. Highlighting moments in our nation’s history when these injustices could have been redressed, from Reconstruction to the New Deal to the Civil Rights Movement, they will examine why we have not yet been able to successfully root out systemic inequalities. Then, they will lay out a roadmap for an effective program of reparations today, arguing that financial reparations have a critical role to play in bridging the gaps created by institutionalized racism and helping our nation finally begin to heal from the centuries-old traumas of slavery. The discussion will also include attention to how educators (K-12, community college, and beyond) can integrate the concept of reparations into their classrooms.

This event is being held in collaboration with Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College and the NC Museum of History, and is supported by funding from the  Braitmayer Foundation.
