About the book from Professor Faliveno:
I chose Fun Home as a Great Book because it represents one of the many exciting and ever-evolving forms that creative nonfiction can take. While the world of graphic essays and memoirs is still a relatively small one, in recent years it has grown and expanded, and Fun Home remains a foundational and lasting work in that field, highlighting the way visual and written art can coexist to create a vivid, immersive, multi-formal and multi-dimensional kind of storytelling. Fun Home is both a deeply powerful (and often deeply funny) queer coming-of-age story as well as a fundamentally literary one, drawing on classic works of literature as allegory throughout the book. As a professor of creative nonfiction at UNC, I teach Fun Home every semester, and it is no exaggeration to say I find something new in its pages every time I read it.
