In Our Time by Ernest Hemingway
featuring Hilary Lithgow, Teaching Professor of English and Comparative Literature
About the book from Dr. Lithgow:
In Our Time is a miniature masterpiece. Showcasing Hemingway’s minimalist style, the stories in this collection provide no direct insight into his characters’ interior lives. Readers are left, as we often are in life, to interpret sparse, cryptic words and unnarrated actions and try to understand what these people are feeling– if they even feel anything at all! I especially love this collection because of the riddle that its form creates for readers, as the brief, war-related passages between stories invite us to question how—or if—this collection should be considered a war story. Fair warning: this two-session book group will emphasize depth over breadth. Although some of our discussion will address the book as a whole, we will focus mainly on only 5 stories, including of course the famous “Big Two-Hearted River.”
