Saturday, April 4, 2020 | 8:30 am – 5 pm | UNC-Chapel Hill’s Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Life and Culture

REGISTER HERE TODAY – Space is limited for this FREE event!

Anti-lynching activist Ida B. Wells-Barnett believed that “The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.” 8th-12th grade public school teachers are invited to join us for a day-long event to celebrate the incredible life and work of this Black journalist, advocate, educator, and anti-lynching activist, who used the power of words to fight racial violence at the height of lynching between the 1890s and the 1930s.

April 4th will begin with a panel discussion for the general public featuring Nikole Hannah-Jones (The 1619 Project) and Ron Nixon, both founders of the Ida B. Wells Society, followed by an examination of the history of racial terror lynchings in Orange County, NC. Attending teachers will then breakout into a workshop with Carolina K-12 in which we examine how to teach comprehensively about our shared “hard history” to ensure students understand the implications of our past and are empowered to address the challenges of the present. From integrating primary sources to engaging in effective classroom conversations about difficult subjects, teachers will leave with strategies and specific lesson plans for teaching about Ida B. Wells-Barnett, racial terror lynching, the lasting legacies of racial violence, resistance and agency, and more.

While registration is open to any 8th – 12th grade currently practicing teacher, priority registration will be given to teachers in Orange County, NC and in Title I schools. Teachers registering must be able to attend the entire symposium on April 4th. (Unfortunately, late arrivals or early departures cannot be accommodated to ensure registrants get the most out of the event.) Please check your calendar to ensure you can participate for the entirety of 8:30 – 5 pm before registering. Please note that filling out this form does not guarantee your registration; you will receive notice regarding acceptance withing 8 days of submitting your form. Questions can be sent to Paul Bonnici at bonnici@unc.edu .

***Out of deep appreciation for teachers, this event is being offered FREE OF CHARGE (valued at $150+ p.p. when considering presenter fees/travel and food costs). It is thus critical that registrants needing to cancel provide notice before Friday March 27. Failure to cancel and not attending results in waste of materials, food, & funding, and prevents teachers on the wait list from participating.***

This event is sponsored by the Orange County Community Remembrance Coalition, the UNC-Chapel Hill Center for the Study of the American South, the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Journalism, The Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Cultural and History, Carolina K-12 at UNC-Chapel Hill, the Chapel Hill/Carrboro Branch of the NAACP, and #BlackOutLoudUNC.
