The world’s preeminent historian of World War II introduces us to the United States and World War II. In a series of four lectures, Gerhard L. Weinberg explores the United States’ role in the war’s origins, its activities in the early phase of the war and efforts to aid the Allies and avoid war with Japan, American strategy in the Pacific and European theaters of war, and the major changes within U.S. society that occurred as a result of American war efforts. Whether you’re familiar with Professor Weinberg’s amazing command of the complexities of this war or new to our programs, you will not want to miss him explore these topics and events that changed world history.
Speaker
Gerhard Weinberg, William Rand Kenan, Jr. Professor of History, Emeritus, retired from teaching at Carolina in 1999, but remains active in his field. He is one of the world’s most distinguished scholars of World War II and National Socialist Germany. He is the author of ten books, including A World at Arms: A Global History of World War II, which received three major awards for scholarship, was a Book of the Month Club Main Selection, and is widely considered to be the best single-volume history of World War II. Most recently, Professor Weinberg was awarded the Pritzker Military Library Literature Award, a lifetime achievement prize for excellence in military writing.

**ATTENTION K-12 TEACHERS: The Civic Education Consortium will be offering a special K-12 teacher training on Friday, Oct. 12 in conjunction with this event. If you are a K-12 teacher and are interested in joining us for an additional day of pedagogical training and curriculum exploration, please register through the Civic Education Consortium. Participation for K-12 teachers who register through the Consortium for the two-day World War II event is free of charge and a hotel is provided for teachers residing more than 120 miles from Chapel Hill.
