Two Chinas, One Cook: Culture and Conflict between Taiwan and the People’s Republic

In 1949, with Mao and the Communists’ victory over Chiang Kai-Shek and the nationalists, China was split in two. The nationalists retreated to the island of Taiwan/Formosa and established the Republic of China there. Ever since, a bitter standoff with periodic flare ups has ensued between these two political entities. Join Michelle King as she explains this dual history, the role of the U.S. in it, and its effect on both Taiwan and China. This lecture will use the prism of culture to update us on a region always in the news.
