Stanley W. Black, Georges Lurcy Distinguished Professor of Economics, Emeritus

It is rare for books on economics to be purchased by anyone other than a university library, yet Thomas Piketty’s Capital has soared to the top of the New York Times non-fiction bestseller list. At the heart of the text is Piketty’s stunning claim that income inequality is an intrinsic outcome of capitalist markets—an assertion that flies in the face of much liberal economic theory since the 18th century. Esteemed economist Stanley Black will take a critical look at the work, explaining its theory and assessing its claims.
