Offered in Conjunction with the PlayMakers Repertory Company production of Steven Sondheim’s Into the Woods

Following the success of last spring’s Table Talk, we are excited to collaborate with PlayMakers this fall to offer an evening of great food, wine, and even better conversation. Scholars and artists will offer short prompts on themes in Sondheim’s musical, Into the Woods, set in magical fairy tale woods. Guided discussions over a four-course meal will be interspersed with cast appearances. There is only one rule to follow during the evening: after informal introductions, we challenge all guests to stay on topic! This will be an event unlike any we’ve offered, so come and join in a night of reflection and dialogue on fairy tales, the meaning of the wilderness, magic, and producing the musical.

Speakers & Topics
Poet Maureen Sherbondy on reimaging fairy tales in the 21st century, featuring a reading from her latest collection, Beyond Fairy Tales: Poems in Concrete & Flesh

Jay M. Smith, Professor of History, on the role of the mysterious woods and monsters in European history

Randall G. Styers, Associate Professor and Chair of Religious Studies, on magic and its appeal
