Eve M. Duffy, Director, The Program in the Humanities and Human Values and Adjunct Assistant Professor of History

The German mercenary Hans Staden traveled to Brazil in the sixteenth century and returned to his native Hesse to write one of the most popular books of the day, The True History, in which he recounted tales of shipwreck, captivity, cannibalism, and ultimately Staden’s escape and return to the Protestant lands of his birth. Join Program Director Eve Duffy as she discusses how the book reveals the complexity of intercultural exchange in the early modern Atlantic world.
