Hip Hop and Diplomacy: An Unlikely Partnership

November 13, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

$10

Featuring Mark Katz, Professor of Music and Founding Director of the Next Level cultural diplomacy program and Joshua Rowsey, aka (J)Rowdy, rapper, educator, and activist.

Professor Katz will speak about his new book, Build: The Power of Hip Hop Diplomacy in a Divided World. The book is based on research he conducted in more than 25 countries around the world during his time directing Next Level, a State Department–funded program that sends hip hop artists abroad to foster cultural exchange in underserved communities. (J)Rowdy, who participated in the Next Level program, will speak about his experience as a hip hop diplomat and perform songs from his recent album, Black Royalty. This unlikely partnership of music and diplomacy makes a fascinating story.
