Stoicism: Ancient Wisdom for an Unsettled World
February 4, 2023 @ 10:30 am - 12:30 pm
In recent years, the ancient Greek and Roman philosophy of Stoicism has become a pop culture phenomenon. From Silicon Valley to the military to the self-help movement, Americans are increasingly recognizing the relevance of Stoic approaches to resilience and self-mastery. Yet despite Stoicism’s growing popularity, its complex historical and philosophical basis is often under-appreciated.
This two-hour event (free and open to the public) will provide a crash course in the history and philosophy of Stoicism, opportunities for participants to discuss and evaluate the merits of Stoic ethical teachings, and a chance to develop their own Stoic practices. It will be led by Z Quanbeck, PhD Candidate in Philosophy at UNC-CH and former Adams Fellow for the Public Humanities, and will be held at the Durham County Library.
Seating is limited, so pre-registration is required. For more details and to register, visit https://durhamcountylibrary.libcal.com/event/9941596.
