The Adult Spelling Bee was just the beginning. We’ve successfully added to the evening festivities with our new game show, “Oh the Humanities,” featuring Carolina faculty in compromising positions. Come and learn as they squirm, when we team up again with the Dirty South Comedy Theater to bring you knowledge in fun non-traditional formats. More NightLabs events are planned so be sure to like us on Facebook at UNC Program in the Humanities for information. No pre-registration is required for NightLabs events.

Oh the Humanities – A game show featuring UNC-CH faculty and DSI comedians

Oh the Humanities is an event series which helps us fulfill our mission of bridging the divide between campus scholarship and the wider community by reaching a broader demographic in non-traditional settings. This is a game show experience akin to NPR’s Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me—but just not on the radio…yet. We pair two UNC faculty members with comedians from DSI to compete in a series of lighthearted games centered around their research.

Each show is tailored differently, but some possible games include:

  • Important Scholarship/Trivial Application: Faculty members will apply something they study to news or popular culture (e.g. which Shakespearean character is most like [Newt Gingrich]? etc.)
  • Amazing Facts!:  Professors provide an interesting fact about something they study. Comedians will write two that are not real—audience will guess which is true.
  • Who/What am I: Professors bring some person/idea/thing they study and comedians will have 20 yes/no questions to guess it.
  • The big unanswered question: Comedians will try to solve a major conundrum in the professors’ field.  The professors will choose the best answer.
  • Villain/Hero of the professors’ discipline.
  • Crossfire: The professors will ask each other questions in rapid fire fashion.
  • Call in Guest: Someone/Something the professors study will call in and they must guess who/what they are.

Time: All shows start at 7:00 p.m.

Tickets: $6.00 – can be purchased in advance here.
