Great Cities of Europe: Paris & Berlin — A Dialogues Seminar

Jack Lang, the former French culture minister, once said, “Paris is always Paris and Berlin is never Berlin.” Historian Don Reid will examine how Paris has evolved over the past several decades: the impact of immigrants, the growing presence of Muslim communities, the debates about the legacy of the colonial past, and the changing economic, social, and political contexts and how these recent changes are still linked to Parisian history over time. In spite of the myth of Berlin as a city in a perpetual state of becoming, Gabriel Trop will look at the ways in which Berlin—given its current status as the center of political and economic power as well as cultural innovation—navigates the complexities of its past by framing itself as a city of the future.
