Exploring the World of Ideas
Community
“You get to share your views about the world in a group of people who have a wide variety of life experiences and backgrounds, and it’s a lot of fun!” – Adventures in Ideas Participant
We serve as the public face of the humanities for the UNC College of Arts and Sciences. Our work embodies the university’s mission to extend the resources of the University to the citizens of North Carolina to enhance the quality of life for all people. We offer public seminars and brief lectures on a variety of topics throughout the year.
Resources for Teachers
“I laugh, I wonder, I learn something” – NC teacher describing an Adventures in Ideas seminar.
The Program in the Humanities integrated the NC Civic Education Consortium into its programs in April, 2012. In conjunction, the Program and the Consortium support NC teachers by offering quality professional development programs, which include access to scholars on key topics, innovative lesson plans, and interactive pedagogical training.
Each year, approximately 200 teachers attend our trainings and seminars. In this year alone, lesson plans created to compliment seminar topics were downloaded over 50,000 times! To learn more about our opportunities for teachers and to browse our K-12 resources, click here.
Faculty Support
“The topics are varied, the faculty are world-class scholars, and the environment is fun and stimulating.”
Teaching at a UNC Humanities Program Seminar allows faculty the opportunity to personally share their research with a broad public audience.
Faculty also have the chance to network and collaborate with other academics from a variety of disciplines and to be challenged by new input, questions, and ideas.
We feature faculty from UNC- Chapel Hill, Duke University, NC State University, and many other premier colleges and universities across the country.
